How should I format my USB drive (FAT32, exFAT, NTFS)?

Updated over a week ago

When preparing a USB drive for distributing an Offline Presentation, choosing the correct file system ensures compatibility with your client’s device.

FAT32 (Most Compatible)

  • Works on all major operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux).

  • Compatible with nearly all Smart TVs.

  • ⚠️ Limitation: Cannot store individual files larger than 4 GB.

If none of your video files exceed 4 GB, FAT32 is the safest choice.

exFAT

  • Supported by both Windows and macOS.

  • Removes the 4 GB file size limit.

  • Sony TVs commonly support exFAT.

Use exFAT if your videos exceed 4 GB and the target device supports it.

NTFS

  • Supported by both Windows and macOS (macOS can read but not write without additional software).

  • Removes the 4 GB file size limit.

  • Samsung TVs and many others support NTFS.

Use NTFS if your videos exceed 4 GB and the device supports it.

Smart TV Compatibility

  • Sony TVs → FAT32 or exFAT.

  • Samsung and many others → FAT32 or NTFS.

  • Some TVs support all three formats.

  • If you’re unsure, FAT32 is the most universally compatible—but only if your files are under 4 GB.
